Sound

This Banjo has required several years of tinkering to finally get a sound that I liked. Out of the box it is “set up” for CGDA tuning. It came with light gauge strings that gave it a very bright shrill tone. Now with medium gauge strings it has a mellow tone that I like. The CGDA tuning never suited this banjo. The low C never had enough tension to give a true note. The intonation was dreadful. I played the mandolin for years but I never liked it. Then I through it in the closet for about three years. On a whim I decided to tune it Chicago style, DGBE. It actually sounded great and the intonation improved. Now fastforward and add the medium gauge strings I love it! I can play F shape chords all the way up the neck with good intonation. I have never heard a tenor banjo in person to compare sound however.

Setup

This banjo was unplayable when received. The head was super loose, the neck twisted and the strings on the frets on one side and a quarter inch on the other.. However the adjustable trust rod, coordinating rods etc. allow you to fix this if you know what your doing. Considering I did not know what I was doing it took me years to get it right.

Overall Comments

If you want to play Chicago style tuned tenor banjo that needs some work this is a good banjo. However it has taken about 100$ to get it playable.
