Where Purchased: BAX music

Year Purchased: 2020
Price Paid: 190.00 (GBP) historic exchange rates / currency converter

Sound

My first banjo so, you know, for you guys playing a while you might want to skip. But for anyone just starting out, highly recommend, it’s everything I expected and wanted. Sounds great, looks great, feels great.

Sound Rating: 8

Setup

Remember this is my first banjo and I have zero knowledge. All I’ve done is tune it with an electronic chromatic tuner. I haven’t altered a thing and I love it’s sound. I’m not giving it 10 out of 10 because I lack the experience to know if it should/could sound better.

Setup Rating: 8

Appearance

Personally I like it.

Reliability

Feels like quality

Customer Service

Customer service at BAX music was non existent. They missed two delivery dates and failed to answer any emails, the couple of times I tried calling to speak to someone I was just on hold for 10mins and never actually got put through. A real shame because the banjo came well packaged, played virtually out of the box and was approx £40 cheaper than everywhere else. I just can’t recommend them because they don’t respond to you.

Components

Complete newbie to the banjo so I lack the knowledge to be able to answer this. The banjo looks and feels great though.

Overall Comments

Incredibly happy with my first banjo, shame about the suppliers (BAX music) lack of customer service.

Setup

Note: I am a beginner

Banjo was setup by the manufacturer (per their site). I did find the head to be slightly unevenly tensioned but didn't seem to affect the tone. I am learning Clawhammer style so I eventually started looking for a warmer sound. I started by changing to a 5/8" Grover compensated bridge and a no knot tailpiece. This banjo already had a low crown head but the head still sits slightly above the tension hoop so I had to shim up the no knot tailpiece slightly (piece of wire) so that it wouldn't contact the head. I finally ended up changing the head to a Remo Renaissance low crown and I really enjoy the tone. These upgrades only totalled around $34 without shipping. I did find a lump on the weld of the tension hoop while it was removed so I made sure this faced up when reinstalling it to allow even contact with the head (hidden under the tailpiece). I am using GHS PF200 medium strings.

Setup Rating: 6

Appearance

It is not fancy, but there are no blemishes outside of the tension hoop as mentioned above.

Appearance Rating: 8

Reliability

As I am a beginner, I have no reference of comparison but this banjo holds tuning. I have used both open G tuning and double C (capoed at second fret) so far. The tuners seem to operate well.

Reliability Rating: 8

Customer Service

Haven't had any warranty work done. This banjo has a three year manufacturers warranty, one year from Elderly.

Customer Service: 10

Components

From a beginners point of view, everything works as it should, even if not top-of-the-line (as expected)

Overall Comments

This banjo works great for me as a beginner on a budget. I expect to replace it as my main banjo someday but will keep it as a backup and for camping and such.
