Pisgah  12" Stainless Walnut Dobson Rambler Banjo Reviews

Submitted by DropThumb Rich (see all reviews from this person) on 1/10/2019

Where Purchased: Direct from Pisgah

Year Purchased: 2018
Price Paid: $1469 ($US)

Sound

The sound is different from what I'm used to. I've got a Deering Americana w/ light strings and this banjo is a different animal altogether. It will take me a while to acclimate to it. I wasn't completely sold on the Dobson tone ring at first but it's growing on me. I realize I've got to play cleaner than I'm used to to get the best sound out of it.
Overall I love the sound and I think as time goes by it will get even better.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

The banjo plays great right out of the box. Strings are a little lower than I'm used to but then I've been playing my other banjo and the strings are fairly high on that.

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

This banjo is a work of art. It really is flawless. I inspected it closely when I got it and it's pretty close to perfect. The finishes are beautiful and the fit on the parts is precise and clean. It's a thing of beauty. VERY well made

Appearance Rating: 10

Reliability

I think this banjo would survive a nuclear attack. It is solid and built to last. I don't feel like I need to baby it at all. It's built to be played.

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

Patrick at Pisgah has a reputation as being great with customer service and that's exactly what I experienced. He's on top of emails and is always happy to answer questions. I made a few changes along the way and the banjo was made just the way I wanted it.

Components

What stands out to me most is the neck. It's walnut and it's beautiful. Very smooth, feels good in the hand and solid as a rock. There are no weaknesses that I can see anywhere on the banjo.

Overall Comments

Overall I love this banjo. I'm going to have to up my game to do it justice. Like I said, it will demand more precise playing and that will force me to get better.I still think I want a woody with a persimmon tone ring. If I can swing it, I'll order another banjo from Pisgah. They're a great company to deal with and you can tell they take pride in their work. I highly recommend them!

Where Purchased: Pisgah Banjo Co.

Year Purchased: 2017
Price Paid: $1695 ($US)

Sound

The volume is much louder than expected and can hold its own in a group setting with ease. The tone can be changed, of course, by where you play on the head. I play both 2 and 3 finger style and am in the process of learning clawhammer and this banjo seems to suit all 3 styles. I even throw in a few blues tunes now and then.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

I opened it up and started picking. The action was set higher than I was accustomed to, but it didn't take long to adjust, and I feel the higher action may help increase the volume, so I won't be making any adjustments in that regard.

Appearance

I love the natural woods of this banjo. Deep East Texas where I live, like North Carolina is full of persimmon and walnut, so I chose those woods. Finger oils are already giving the persimmon fretboard a rich patina. One minor flaw on this beauty was, 2 of the fret markers on the folk heel were not sanded off. I am positive Patrick would have corrected this had I brought it to his attention, but I was not about to let go of my banjo for on dadblame minute!!! No points off for this.

Appearance Rating: 10

Reliability

I expect this banjo to be passed down to many different generations with no problems. Built solid and made to last, and that's good, because I carry it everywhere I go.

Customer Service

I can't say enough good things about Patrick. Kept me informed on progress and gave me everything I asked for and then some. In fact, before long, I am going to have him build me a fretless banjo! I just wish I could give more than a 10.

Components

Hair trigger gotah tuners, no knot tail piece, which I will at some point change to a hawk tail.

I would like to thank all of you folks that helped me back in August, 2017, when I first started looking

for a clawhammer banjo. I spent a little more than my $1200 budget, but I'm as happy as a "mule in a brier

patch"! I can't count the times I have gone to sleep holding it in my arms, anyway thanks to all for your advice,

and when I get a little braver, I'll do a video. Anyone looking for a great banjo, you really do need to check out a Pisgah.

                                 All My Best,
