Prust  Basic Tackhead Banjo Reviews

Submitted by CoE15NJV (see all reviews from this person) on 6/28/2017

Where Purchased: Eric's website

Year Purchased: 2017
Price Paid: 208 ($US)

Sound

Deep and woody, not "muddy". Not too loud, but not muted either...I love the sound of this banjo (so does my dog...he doesn't like my WL-250 banjo at all!) .

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

Eric ships the banjo with the strings untuned and the bridge off. He sends instructions on where to place the bridge and how to tune...also what to do if the 5th string peg pops out...all easy to do.

Setup Rating: 9

Appearance

Would it win a beauty contest? No...but it's not supposed to. This is a working man's/woman's instrument...not ugly by any means...but not a flawless beauty. I like it. Neck is maple, pot is white oak.

Appearance Rating: 9

Reliability

No hardware to speak of. Solidly built...nothing on this banjo is going to break unless I drop it or run over it wth my car.

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

Both Eric and Donna are easy to work with. All questions were answered the same day. No mention of a warranty. Eric sends pictures of the completed banjo, if you like how it looks, he ships it to you and then you pay him on approval...no deposit required.

Components

Calf-skin head, ebony violin tuners (which work well), 3 different size bridges to accomodate humidity changes. Nylgut Minstrel strings (they take about a week of stretching...no surprise).

Components Rating: 9

Overall Comments

This is a solidly built, great sounding banjo. I've had the banjo for about a month, so I've had some time to evaluate it. Eric's business is based on trust...you pay for the banjo only after you receive it and approve it; if you don't like it, you send it back. I would recommend Eric Prust's banjos to anyone. About the best $200 I ever spent...and I mean it!

I love playing this banjo. My other banjos are getting no play at this point. I would recommend getting a Prust banjo with no reservation. I can't imagine there is a better banjo value in the market today.
