Pisgah  11" Walnut Dobson A scale Banjo Reviews

Submitted by oldclawwv (see all reviews from this person) on 6/10/2017

Where Purchased: Pisgah website

Year Purchased: 2016
Price Paid: 1250 ($US)

Sound

I absolutely love the Pisgah banjo. As a clawahmmer player, the banjo provided the sound that I was looking for. In my opinion the banjo had a perfect setup as it arrived. The bridge placement was even marked for future reference. The banjo is very loud, but still retains the bass end that I like in an instrument, while not neglecting a crisp upper range.

Sound Rating: 9

Setup

As I mentioned, the setup was already wonderful when the banjo arrived. The action is slightly high as I prefer it, but not to the extent that it discords up the neck. The only thing that I have done to the banjo is occasionally stuff a rag in the back.

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

The banjo was exactly what I was looking for as it relates to appearance. I had no inlay put on my banjo. The clean look and attention to detail speak for themselves.

Reliability

I expect this banjo to last me for life, and fully expect someone else to enjoy it after I'm dead- but not before then😀!

Customer Service

The only dealings I've had with the company was when I ordered the banjo. I had met Patrick at Clifftop before I ordered and he was just as helpful over the phone as he is in person. My phone calls were quickly answered-Superb customer service.

Components

The entire banjo is impressive, but the tuners are definitely the standout component. They are quick and easy to tune.

Sound

I played many banjos, both Pisgahs and other high end brands, and the Walnut Dobson had the best tone for me. My banjo teacher loves the tone and recently another of her students and jam buddy of mine bought the same banjo. She too tried several banjos and like the Walnut Dobson the best. I would decribe the tone as mellow and not ringy, yet it is loud and can be heard in a jam. I attribute the tone to the walnut rim and neck as well as the Dobson tone ring.

Setup

Patrick set up the banjo perfect for me. The action is right at 1/8" at the 12th fet and 4th string. The renaisance head was adjusted perfect. After experimenting with the head tension, I ended up with it plenty tight like it had come from Pisgah. It sounded great with the 5/8 stock bridge, though I did replace it with a 5/8 Moon bridge for the asthetics, though the tone improvement was not noticable. The nut width is 1 5/16". The tuners required a little tightening as is often the case with new tuners. The neck is what I would call a soft V shape as opossed to a C shape. I easily got used to it and like the feel of it. The strings it comes with are D'Addario medium EJ61s, which suit me perfectly. I should also mention that the 23" scale length tunes to A and G with the string tension being what I like. The longer scale versions I tried have a strong enough neck to tune to A, but the string tension in A tuning was tighter than I like.

Appearance

I like the look of Walnut and the way Pisgah finishes all of their banjos accentuates the wood grain. The style is minimalist, nothing fancy, but for me it is just right. The Persimmon fretbourd and headstock overlay has a tight grain and is lovely. After six months of constant playing it seems to be as durable as Rosewood.

Reliability

The brass Gotoh tuners matched with the Balsam Banjo Work raw brass hardware, looks great. I added a brass Vega style armrest for $20 from Eldery, which looks good and matches the other Hardware. So far, no issues with the Balsam American made hardware.

Customer Service

Patrick is a pleasure to deal with. He is friendly and knowlegable. Though I felt like I was interupting his work, I did not feel that way from him. I never felt pressured or hurried and had plenty of time to play quite a selection of banjos in making my selection. A friend of mine was delighted with her purchasing experience also. I have no doubt about Patrick and Pisgah's desire to stand behind their banjos and hardware 100%

You know how certain purchases are....well perfect! This is one of them for me. Every time I pick it up to play - the looks, tone, and playability jump out at me and makes me happy. After 6 months the honeymoon is not over!
