Recording King  Recording King Elite 76 Banjo Reviews

Submitted by ralan29 (see all reviews from this person) on 9/8/2016

Where Purchased: BanjoTeacher.com

Year Purchased: New
Price Paid: Market $ ($US)

Sound

I played it out of the case for the first time and was amazed at the quality of the sound. It glides up the neck where the sound 'crackles'.
The sound for the dollars matches all the three previous and more expensive banjos I have owned.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

Ross offered his professional set up which surely happened in the sound I expressed above. For now I am very happy with the set up and sound so I can't be critical or recommend changes at this moment. There is a lead-time in receiving it but Ross kept me updated on the delivery status and it was well worth the wait.

Setup Rating: 9

Appearance

The finish wood and chrome parts look great. The hearts and flowers inlay finish for the RK-76 was my preference over the RK-75.
I have no negatives at all.

Appearance Rating: 9

Reliability

There is no reason the pristine appearance can't stay preserved as long as proper care and maintenance are practiced.

Reliability Rating: 9

Customer Service

Ross Nickerson was very helpful during the several calls we shared.
Clearly, he knows his product lines and answers any questions you may pose to him.

Customer Service: 10

Components

I like the tuners and considering it is a brand new banjo the tuning
held with miniscule adjustments.

Overall Comments

I am retiring soon and like most people in their early 70's I'm downsizing my life style.  As such I plan to sell my Gibson 1925 5-string

ball bearing banjo soon on BHO..  I spent a great deal of time searching for a substitute sound and recommend research to any

one pursuing the same goal or finding a really good and economical banjo.  For my own experience I certainly made

the right selection with my RK-76.

I'm only an intermediate player who plays for escapism and personal pleasure believing there is something so unique and great

with a banjo. It's a feeling only a banjo lover can savor.  Looking to the future I sense more people will come to recognize the true

value of the RK-76.

Sound

I play mostly bluegrass and this instrument has a full rich sound and tone up and down the neck. Lots of volume.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

Setup was complete but I did add new strings and bridge to suit my taste, and it was easy to do.

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

Very appealing look, mahogony with hearts and flowers inlay pattern on the fret board. No flaws.

Appearance Rating: 10

Reliability

I believe this instrument to be very dependable and sturdy.

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

Contacted Greg Rich regarding a warranty issue and also a repair issue unrelated to quality of instrument. In both instances I received prompt and courteous service.

Components

Hardware is top grade and durable. Banjo rim is solid, as well as the neck. No weak spots.

Overall Comments

I have owned numerous banjo brands over the years, including Gibson, Stelling, and Goldstar.  I currently have three: Madison, RK 36, and RK Elite 76, as well as a Recording King guitar.  Recording King's Greg Rich has provided me with top notch customer service, and for the money you can't beat a Recording King.  I would definitely recommend this product and company.

Sound

Bought this to use in a bluegrass band as a backup. Great sounding banjo (but sound is always subjective). Did nothing other than put another bridge on it - haven't "tinkered" with anything else.

Sound Rating: 8

Setup

Sounded good right out of the box. As it settles in, I may have to "tweek" a few things.

Setup Rating: 8

Appearance

This one came with the traidtional Hearts & Flowers inlay which I have always liked. Mahogany neck and resonator. Seems that the neck was finished a little lighter than the resonator, but I may do a speed neck on it so it donesn't matter to me.

Appearance Rating: 8

Reliability

The hardware looks great now, but time will tell ..... ask me again in a year :)

Reliability Rating: 7

Customer Service

Never dealt with Recording King, but I hear good things.

Components

The banjo is still new, so this is something that not apparent to me yet.

Components Rating: 7

Overall Comments

Overall, seems to be a well-built good-sounding banjo.
