Recording King  RK-35-BR Madison Banjo Reviews

Submitted by Doherty (see all reviews from this person) on 2/8/2016

Where Purchased: Moloney Music (www.moloneymusic.com)

Year Purchased: 2016
Price Paid: 695 ($US)

Sound

Better than expected (and I had quite high expectations). I've spent hours researching on youtube but the videos on there doesn't make it justice at all. It is a rich sound with a punch, but without being overly bright. It is just lovely.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

I ordered it with a heavier Scorpion bridge to give it a more mellow and it really works on it.

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

It is a bit plain looking, although the headstock as well as the neck inlays are pretty. I'd prefer something more shiny rather than the satin finish, but it's alright.

Appearance Rating: 8

Reliability

It feels solid and nothing seems cheap or poorly made.

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

Very friendly and professional. I discussed the set up with Mr Moloney before purchasing and he is most helpful. The packaging was excellent as well. It's also a feelgood factor in purchasing from a smaller business rather than from Thomann.

Components

The rim fit is good and the only adjustment I made was to exchange the stock bridge. I also removed the top cover of the tailpiece, as well as the tiny screw on the back. It's not a necessary adjustment, but I get bothered with the Presto covers. The RK-R35 is a high quality instrument and it feels like it too.

Sound

Great tone, much like Earl's early Granada

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

Just so-so. Head was not tight enough and tailpiece was pulled down too far for my liking. String action at the 1st couple of frets was too high for my playing, so I deepened the nut notches a little.

Setup Rating: 8

Appearance

Excellent

Appearance Rating: 10

Reliability

All excellent except I don't think they used the best tuners they could have although they work okay.

Reliability Rating: 9

Customer Service

Have not had a problem.

Components

Should have better tuners.

Overall Comments

You cannot buy a better quality banjo with the workmanship, tone and playability than a RK-35  for the money. Highly recommended.

Where Purchased: Amazon

Year Purchased: 2014
Price Paid: 751.00 ($US)

Sound

Style of Bluegrass music. It has a very bright & loud sound. It has that sound you would expect from a bluegrass banjo 4 times its price. I would not be afraid to take it to the stage and mic it. The only dislike I have is there is a couple of small blemishes on the neck that you can feel while you are playing. That can be fixed very simply.

Sound Rating: 8

Setup

I have not made any changes to the set up as of yet. Might try to tighten up the head just a little bit.

Setup Rating: 8

Appearance

It is a very simple and classic looking banjo. It has the inlay pattern (Seagall Pattern) from the RB-100 from the 1930s era. The rim is steam bent 3 ply maple, neck is also maple with a satin finish through the whole banjo and resonator. All metal components were of quality nickle plating and the satin finish was flawless except for a couple small places on the neck, and that can be fixed easily.

Appearance Rating: 9

Reliability

It has good quality hardware that seems tobe very well made. The finish of the banjo seems tobe also well made, and should last a good while even with heavy use. I would say that you could depend on this banjo to come through and would not be afraid to use it exclusively on a gig.

Reliability Rating: 9

Customer Service

I have had some communications with the company of origin and they were helpful and quick to respond to any questions that arose. It is a Limited Lifetime warranty.

Components

Some outstanding components of this banjo are the Bell Bronze Tone Ring. Outstanding sound. I think the company could put on a little bit better planetary tuners, but the ones that come with the banjo are ok, they do keep it in tune. I plan to upgrade the tuners in the near future.

Overall Comments

For the money this is a great banjo.  It has the sound of banjos that you would pay $2000+.  It is a good quality made banjo for a Asian import.  I would highly recommend this banjo for anyone just getting into playing a resonator banjo.  Probably the best price for the quality on the market today.
