There are two of this design in the museum. ["What Is that thing?" "I don't know but we got Two of 'em."] Barring concrete evidence we need not reach out to European classical instruments to find antecedents. Independent invention is more likely: bending a splint for sides approximating an oval (rather than round) and using wood for back and front. The heart-shaped soundhole is distinctive but transferable from the Appalachian dulcimer.
