It's the Vintage Amber alcohol based stain from Stewaert MacDonald. I stain the wood, let it dry and sand. I then add more stain until I get the darkness that I want, and then lightly sand in areas that I want lighter. I added stain to the carving with an artist brush to darken it.

Merci Marv. I've been digging out some nice wood, the ebony is incredible as maybe you've seen in classifieds. I've dug(old reserve stock) out a very concentratedbird's-eye plank 3" x 8" x 5' w/ huge eyes and shotgunned I mean everywhere, very high conc. of eye and they are 1/8" - 3/16" eyes. just passin on,
