Here's the bunch of us, in a shot that shows how SMALL this home for thirteen people actually was. Thank God and the U.S. Army for War Surplus bunk beds! Looking EAST, so you can see it wasn't very wide. When she first saw the place, Mom fell in LOVE with the roofed-over front porch, with the concrete block half-wall. "When it RAINS," she said, "they go out THERE!!!!" NONE of us kids grew up afraid of thunder. We'd play PIRATES on the porch, and thunder was just God helping us out with free and spectacular Sound Effects.

Back when the front porch had steps, during one thunderstorm, Lucy, Katie & I were collecting rain in buckets from the downspout at the NE corner of the porch. When the buckets were full, we'd pour their contents down the front steps and enjoy the cascade.
Anyway, one time when Kate had just finished filling a bucket and stepped away from the corner, a lightning bolt struck the house and came down the spout. We stopped collecting water then.
