For the old-time Tune of the Week, 1/23/15. This is Sara Grey's arrangement. She inspired both Mary Z Cox and BHO member Neill Connor to learn it. Neill placed in a recent Love Songs banjo contest with Cherry River Line. Mary will be including it on her upcoming CD. I'm grateful to hear it now on TOTW and enjoy playing it and hearing the words in my head. I'll leave the singing to them!

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 2/17/17, this comes from the playing of NC fiddler Marvin Gaster. It's kind of a simple melody, so it was fun to try various slides, hammer-ons, or chords for variation.

Learned from folklorist, song collector, and skillful melodic banjo clawhammer picker Andy Cahan. I heard of him through his collections in Virginia with Alice Gerard, especially of Roscoe Parrish. This tune is one that Francis O'Neill published in his eminent book of Irish Music published in the first decade of the 1900's. It was named his favorite by the man, Edward Cronin of Tiperary, who played it for him in Chicago when O'Neill was chief of police and collected Irish tunes as a hobby. It's also the first hornpipe notated in that book with 1,850 selections. Perhaps it really is his favorite.

At last a tune from Ohio! Before this Tune of the Week I hadn't heard of the Field Recorders Collective CD called "Along the Ohio's Shores." It must be a good one, if this tune is a typical sample.

From the fiddling of Brad Leftwich on Bob Carlin's seminal CD Banging and Sawing. We can't figure out the title yet, but it sounds a bit ragtime to me.

Inspired by David Grier and friends. Chinquapins are like chestnuts. One thing I do enjoy is gathering pine nuts.

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 6/9/17, Chinquapin Hunting is named for the wild chestnut that grows in parts of the country. My arrangement is based on Bruce Molsky's lively playing.

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 10-28-16, New Yorker Ira Bernstein wrote this tune in the 80's. He is known most famously as a dancer, specializing in Appalachian flatfoot, clogging, and tap. I was quite surprised this week when I learned he wrote a fiddle tune, which is also his favorite instrument to dance to. The A part begins with a minor and the B part modulates, so it's not a common fiddle tune. It's catchy and was actually played in my neck of the woods when Earl White played at a bluegrass festival in Grass Valley, California. However, I admit I'd have learned the tune if it wasn't for this week's TOTW.

TOTW 4/14/2023 Chorus Jig
The curious part of Chorus Jig is why it's named a jig, but isn't in jig time. It's an old tune and apparently jig used to be the name of a dance. The tune modulates, giving it more interest, and to watch dancers, as linked in the TOTW discussion, they're certainly having fun.

Kentucky fiddler Jim Bowles heard the tune from an old colored fiddler who played it for dances and it's said that the tune may pre-date Civil War days. It has an unusual pattern of AABBBBB. The B part has variations, however, with three different parts as I heard it played. I'm playing this on a short scale Doc's Banjo tuned to a double C tuning. I get a happy Christmas Eve feeling from it and look forward to that day soon this year.

Inspired after a wonderful Christmas party for the less fortunate kids at my school and by the anticipation of my own family's time together this season. Dedicated to my husband, Kit, who understands it all.

Melvin Wine's father traditionally played this for the kids. Along with the simple gifts of candy and fruit, with biscuits for breakfast, the tune became a part of Melvin's cherished memories.
