This tune in 3/4 time is a rare find from Turlough O'Carolan (1670 - 1738). It's only found in one source dated in the early 1900's from Chief Francis O'Neill who had procured a rare notebook of old Irish tunes. The melody and title didn't sync well until I made a slide-show video (in the BHO archive) of people happy with tears. As several of my O'Carolan pieces, I've added cello banjo in the background.

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 11/4/16, via James Bryan of Alabama -- my favorite fiddler. If you check out the current TOTW you can also hear Nick Hornbuckle's superb 2-finger version.

From the fiddling of Kentuckian Clyde Davenport for the old-time Tune of the Week, 1/29/16. The tune grows on you. The fingering was fun to figure out, as I kept making little changes the more I played it. The double C tab is in the archive.

I learned this from a CD recommended on BHO to hear Samuel Bayard tunes called "Up in the Batten House" by Mark Tamsula and Richard Withers. It's turned out to be a great resource.

It was suggested that I try this tuning, called Cumberland Gap or Sandy River Belle tuning, to arrange Big Sciota. I'm happy with the relative ease of playing it out of this tuning, though it comes out in the key of F and would need a capo if played with a fiddle.

After having learned it 3-finger picking I thought I'd arrange it for clawhammer. Recently I've also arranged it in another tuning for comparison and will post that MP3, too.

From the collection called "Now That's a Good Tune: Masters of Missouri Fiddling" this tune was learned from Bill Katon (1864 - 1934) by Bob Walters who taught Cyril Stinnett who taught Charlie Walden. I'm learning about these venerated Missouri fiddlers and you can hear all the tunes on the Slippery Hill website.

TOTW - 8/28/20 Billy in the Low Land

Learned from Alan Jabbour's fiddling, who learned it directly from West Virginian fiddler Henry Reed, recorded by Alan extensively in the 60's. This tune is different from Billy in the Lowground. Contacting Alan was easy and he's most helpful to answer my questions about the tune.

I first learned this clawhammer, then recorded it 3-finger picking, now am re-learning it for clawhammer. It's tuned to double C.

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 10/9/15, this comes from the fiddling of West Virginian Melvin Wine and the accompanying tab of Carl Baron. Check it out: http://www.banjohangout.org/topic/309849. I'd rather have a black cat in the briar patch, happily hunting, than have him cross my path. :)

For the Tune of the Week, 2/28/14, this version is mostly from Bigfoot Stringband and Rhys Jones' fiddling. He based it on Robert Sykes (1914-1994). It's a much bluesier Black Eyed Susie than I've ever heard and I've been curious about it, so TOTW has again provided me a good learning platform. Tune in, if you haven't! I'm playing a very lightweight banjo with nylgut strings.

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 12/29/17, this originally was recorded in 1949 by John Sharp, a Kentucky native living in Tennessee. It has resemblance to both Polly Wolly Doodle and a bit of Old Joe Clark. My arrangement comes from the Canote Brothers.

The old-time Tune of the Week for 3/11/16 is Black Jack Grove as recorded by the Lomax's in 1939, played by Texas fiddler Lake N. Porter. The other Black Jack Grove comes from Kentucky fiddler Walter McNew. I play them both here for comparison's sake, which worked out since I arranged them both in open G tuning.
