After arranging the TOTW, I thought I'd search for the chords and transpose them for cello banjo accompaniment. Admittedly, it's just a first effort, but I achieved my goal of getting the deeper sound of the cello banjo to complement the regular banjo.

A 3-part dance tune from France is our treat for Tune of the Week. I find it lovely and quaint, learned from the recording by the Rheingans Sisters in England.

I'm finally learning this tune. It made a great TOTW a while back. Playing on a fretless is quite challenging and also rewarding. The gourd gives it a unique tone. Hope you enjoy!

For the old time Tune of the Week, 4/28/18, the first part of this medley comes from BHO member RG, learned (he thinks) from a wonderful friend, Larry Brown. The second part is how I think traditionally of Barlow Knife in three parts. My dad didn't have a barlow knife, but his boy scout knife reminded me of one.

An original tune by Erynn Marshall, whose other tune Madison County Waltz, was a recent old-time Tune of the Week. Her compositions would be recent, but they have a wonderful old-time feel. For Bass Cove Waltz I combined it with cello banjo accompaniment.

An 8th century Irish hymn. The English translation is beautiful.

This tune in 3/4 time is a rare find from Turlough O'Carolan (1670 - 1738). It's only found in one source dated in the early 1900's from Chief Francis O'Neill who had procured a rare notebook of old Irish tunes. The melody and title didn't sync well until I made a slide-show video (in the BHO archive) of people happy with tears. As several of my O'Carolan pieces, I've added cello banjo in the background.

My banjo arrangement from a song about the loss of our beautiful wilderness areas. Sue Massek has a long performing history in Kentucky with her band Reel World String Band. She plays banjo, though I arranged from the fiddle and the vocals.

As played by old-time Virginia fiddler Emmett Lundy. It's a beautiful little tune.

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 11/4/16, via James Bryan of Alabama -- my favorite fiddler. If you check out the current TOTW you can also hear Nick Hornbuckle's superb 2-finger version.

From the fiddling of Kentuckian Clyde Davenport for the old-time Tune of the Week, 1/29/16. The tune grows on you. The fingering was fun to figure out, as I kept making little changes the more I played it. The double C tab is in the archive.

I learned this from a CD recommended on BHO to hear Samuel Bayard tunes called "Up in the Batten House" by Mark Tamsula and Richard Withers. It's turned out to be a great resource.

The source recording is from a 1930 recording of Seven Foot Dilly and His Dill Pickles. I learned from a modern recording of the Old Yeller Dog Band because I liked how the fiddle filled in the held notes.

From West Virginia fiddler Edden Hammons, this sawmill tune is so typical of what we love about old-time music. It's evocative and the two parts seem to make a conversation. Is the tune named for an old nagging woman? I tuned down on my little short neck Doc's Banjo to play along with Adam Hurt's gourd banjo recording of Biddy on his new CD "Back to the Earth" and surprisingly got decent tone.

It was suggested that I try this tuning, called Cumberland Gap or Sandy River Belle tuning, to arrange Big Sciota. I'm happy with the relative ease of playing it out of this tuning, though it comes out in the key of F and would need a capo if played with a fiddle.

After having learned it 3-finger picking I thought I'd arrange it for clawhammer. Recently I've also arranged it in another tuning for comparison and will post that MP3, too.

I like Doc Watson's version. Mine's clawhammered.
