The date hasn't rung any bells yet, but the minor key sure gives it a rather melancholy feel. I listened to some vintage Piney Creek Weasels to arrange this one and used a rare Am tuning rare -- aEACE.

After watching a Giants baseball pennant win I wrote this tune as they celebrated. They're a downhome team to root for--with not a single hero, but all shining stars.

An original fiddle tune waltz written for her friend, John Hartford. To get the range of April's fiddle, I used the cello banjo and even tuned down the fourth string for the one low G note in the B part. I always like the challenge of learning from the fiddle...

Rose for Polly is a pretty, 3-part song in a minor key. Perhaps it makes for a good love story -- a hopeful suitor gives her a rose, she responds sweetly, but with a bit of reservation, though continuing to offer hope.

Jake Phelps was a Kentucky fiddler who is known for the "unusual tunes" he played. This recording is multi-tracked with cello banjo accompaniment. I find Across the Plains enchanting and think of the Westward Ho pioneers beginning their journey, before the problems set in....

From the Bayard collection of southwestern Pennsylvania via Mark Tamsula and Richard Withers. I arranged these in the old Cumberland Gap tuning--f#BEAD, tuned up one step.

Melvin Wine, the great West Virginia fiddled learned this from his father and it goes back to one of his great-grandfather Smithy's favorite tunes. This is for TOTW.

This old Scottish love song, based on William Douglas's poem in around 1700, was also the first performance attempt of Lotta Crabtree (1847 - 1923). Known now as the Shirley Temple of the 19th century, Lotta walked onto a school stage in San Francisco as a wee little girl under six years old. She burst into tears when trying to sing Annie Laurie and ran off stage. So, stage fright is certainly nothing new! She got over it and became a millionaire and successful Broadway performer, leaving her millions to charity in the 1920's.

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 7/18/14, this arrangement is from Kentucky fiddlers Jim Bowles and Isham Monday's similar versions. I find it's a melody expressing hope and celebration. I'm in double C tuning, capoed 2, playing my Whyte Laydie openback made by Mac Traynham.

John Lusk was a Tennessee fiddler born in 1889 and grandson of a slave who had been sent to New Orleans to learn fiddle. John played with two family members and was recorded by the Library of Congress first in the 1940's. Apple Blossom feels like a square dance tune.

For the Tune of the Week, 3/21/14 from the fiddling of George Mert Reeves. This recording may be found on the Slippery Hill website on a section I looked at less often. I perceive another treasure chest has been discovered!

Learned from Kenny Baker's version with Bill Monroe. Boy, he sure put in a lot of notes! God bless him.

Recorded a few years ago, now I prefer clawing this lovely piece, but the first arrangement I tried was with 3-finger picking.

For the Tune of the Week, Feb. 16, 2013, played on a Gold Tone Cripple Creek mini banjo. Learned watching Clyde Davenport video. What a pretty tune and he's amazing at 92 years old!

Kit wrote this song in honor of his precious granddaughter, Audrey. She's a lively one and the tune really fits her. I'm playing on a Mac Traynham Whyte Laydie in double C tuning.

I'd been working on the "Galax lick" I learned from Adam Hurt, then turned to a Brad Leftwich arrangement of Tommy Jarrel's Backstep Cindy, and finally figured out how to insert that little phrase into a TOTW, Granny Went to Meeting. Other people have different names for the Galax lick, but it's still a convenient way to identify a familiar pattern of fingering and timing.

A 3-in-1 Tune of the Week, Ballydesmond Polkas are three Irish tunes played together as a medley. It being so long, I play through it all once, giving it a structure of AABBCCDDEEFF. It's said that the medley is played rapidly. I'm up to 90%.
