My friend the great Jim Reed on Bluegrass Banjo! I'm just trying to hang in there with some backup for Jim playing the rest of the instruments: Soprano & Bass Banjos plus some snare drum. That's my hillbilly family (Wife & Son) contributing the "Rebel Yell!" ;-)

Tom Berghan In 1746, Bonnie Prince Charles led his supporting Scottish clans against the British on the fields of Culloden. The British won the battle, and the clans were decimated. During the purges of the highlands, thousands were lost, families and clans were destroyed, lands were seized and the people plunged into poverty, and the Scots were stripped of their tartans, music and weapons. Clans from the Loch Lomond area had followed Prince Charles in the rebellion. This folk song reflects the despair of the time. The legend of this song is that it was written by a young soldier to his sweetheart. Two of Prince Charles’ soldiers were captured in Carlisle. One was condemned to die and he wrote the song. The other was released and took the song back to Scotland to give to his colleague’s sweetheart. The low road refers to the condemned soldier’s impending death and the path of his spirit, whilst the high road is the actual road his friend must travel back to Scotland over the high and rugged hills, hence, the condemned soldier’s spirit would return via the low road and be back in Scotland first.

Just aquired a Melody Banjo, Lyon and Healy, circa 1915. This is its maiden voyage after I spent the morning trying differnt string materials and gauges. What you hear is a combination of silk-core wound with nickel silver, KF nylon, and steel. I think it came our pretty even. What do you think?

This is from the “Notebook for Anna Magdalena." Apparently there is some controversy over the actual authorship of this minuet. Christian Petzold is believed to have composed two of the pieces from the 1725 Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach: the familiar "Minuet in G major" (BWV Anh.II 114) and its partner piece, "Minuet in G minor" (BWV Anh.II 115). These were traditionally believed to have been composed by J.S. Bach but scholarship, particularly on the part of Hans-Joachim Schulze, has recently pointed to Petzold. The Minuet in G Major is catalogued as a BWV Anh. piece because to this day, nobody knows if Christian Petzold or J.S. Bach was the one who composed it. Petzold acted as an agent of J.S. Bach keyboard Partitas. Soprano 4 string banjo & Baritone 4-string banjo.

The most famous abolitionist anti slavery song of 19th century America, published in 1853 by Stephen Foster and made famous by Christy's Minstrels in the same year. Likely inspired by the narrative of popular anti-slavery novelist Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin," while likely referencing imagery witnessed on his visits to the Bardstown, Kentucky farm called Federal Hill. In Foster's sketchbook, the song was originally entitled "Poor Uncle Tom, Good-Night!," but was altered by Foster as "My Old Kentucky Home, Good-Night." Abolitionist Frederick Douglass thought the song stimulated "the sympathies for the slave, in which anti-slavery principles take root and flourish.
