At Suwannee Banjo Camp, one afternoon in the parking lot, a bluegrass student asked Bill to try his custom banjo. Bill played Nola, with some glitches, questions about the best way to play it, etc. This shows he was an unassuming guy, who wasn't afraid to make mistakes, and try out new licks and patterns to get the melody right. There is a piece of some other tune at the start before Nola starts.

Tim O'Brien (aka Red Knuckles, of Trailblazers fame) recorded a slow country version of tis old Beatles song with all the minor chords deleted. My wife and I took the RK version and pushed it up to OT/BG speed, than our neo-trad contraband, Banjovi, recorded this back in the nineties.

This tune has a passage early on that I knew I had stolen from some other tune I'd heard. I asked a bluegrass buddy about it, and he said that two of the chords in the sequence are also in "Harley's Breakdown" and in "Interstate Breakdown." The quotation marks are there to indicate titles, not to denote direct quotes for I may be recalling what my buddy said. The title, "Rocky Comfort" is the name of a road here in southern Illinois. I find the name intriguing, seeming to specify ease-with-difficulty. I did an internet sears and found that it was the name of a large plantation in Florida, but the local road name remains a mystery. The tune seems somewhat bittersweet to me, so "Rocky Comfort" is apt.

A blues song, made famous by Muddy Waters, but recorded by everyone on the block. Waters put 3 of the chocking riffs between each line, but using only two suits me better. The picking is straight bum-ditty in G modal on a pony longneck banjo with Vega style N pot.

My friends Kent McDaniel and Tawl Paul Fredrick made a CD of Paul singing mostly blues with rock band backup. They asked me to provide some banjo licks for this Muddy Waters song. The CD is available on bandcamp with Tawl Paul after the slash.

An Arkansas Ozark version of a "British broadside ballad." more generally known as "Whiskey in the Jar," or "Kilgary Mountain." See sound off forum for more information.

Made famous by Les Paul and Mary Ford (check youtube), and brought into bluegrass in the 1970s by Walter Hensley (again, check youtube), this may be the first clawhammer--make that clawjazz--version of this fabulous tune.
