Larry was my banjo player. My inspiration to take up the banjo in the first place. He came to our church during a preachers meeting, picked his banjo and gave his testimony. After that I went out and bought my first banjo. To this day he is still my hero, inspiration, and a true model.
If you don't know who he is, he is one of the original first generation pickers, three time world champion, and a wonderful person to know. He was from the Tri-cities area down around Kingsport.
After making it to the top, he realized he need that he needed to be born again. He didn't know God wanted him to pick, so his banjo gathered dust, as he read through his Gideon New Testament. It had the Psalms in the very back. He read those too, until he got to the very last Psalm - Psalm 150. I picked his "Banjer" back up and played until he "died on the battlefield" for his Lord, and became an evangelist. RIP old friend!
I feel strongly that he does not get enough recognition for his contribution as a banjo player, and also what a fine vocalist!
If anyone else has something they know about Larry, please share. I want to hear more about this great man!
