Well, I thought I should post an update to say, I haven't given up - I am still learning to play the tenor banjo!
I am interested in rags and early jazz so opted for CGDA. I have learnt to read from a score but, learning to play chord melody is proving to be more of a challenge. I was on the verge of giving-up as I would get stuck trying to figure something out and all the tunes I wanted to play felt so far out-of-reach. In a state of despondency, I decided to contact Steve Caddick for skype lessons. I am now making inching progress and feeling more hopeful...I like having homework to do and getting feed-back on what I am doing. I even brought my tenor banjo along to a jam and just practiced playing chords along to things like Squirrel Hunters (not really what I am aiming to play but at least it gets me playing with others). In fact, repertoire is something I need to think about as the only musicians I know play guitar, fiddle and mandolin. Well, that's it for now. A further report by Xmas!3 comments
