Began banjo as a college freshman in Knoxville, TN in spring of 1972. Began recording traditional musicians in 1974. Produced traditional music events at over 30 Tennessee State Parks continually from 1976 to 2023 Producer/Director of the Tennessee Banjo Institute for all 3 years of its presentation -- first year presenting over 30 banjo masters and final year contracting with over 100 of the world's greatest players of every genre, including the first presentation in America of African masters of traditional instruments that are in the ancestry of the modern 5-string banjo. Created Sandrock Recordings label featuring traditional musicians of the Cumberlands region in Tennessee. Advised and travelled with production crews for 2 documentaries focused on banjo history and modern performance. Recorded and performed for a 5-LP set of traditional music of the Cumberlands released by County Records.
