Andrew Jackson, Go Back Home, Ponce de Leon, Prince Murat

Thursday, May 6, 2010

Thought I'd write a little today about three men who, for better or worse, shaped Florida History.

Andrew Jackson, although from Tennessee, terrorized North Florida for many years in the early 1800s.  He nearly wiped out the entire Creek nation, and he even burnt Tallahassee to the ground in 1819. After his genocide of the North Florida Indians, he became president  and was responsible for the famous "Trail Of Tears. "

Even over a 150 years later, there are ill feelings toward him in much of North Florida and South Georgia.

The tune I wrote about him, Andrew Jackson, Go Back Home, is an instrumental and an MP3 of it is on my music page here at BHO. It is played on the Hunchback Wunderlich banjo which is a reproduction fretless, skin head, gut string, low tuned banjo that would have been the type of banjo played during the time of Andrew Jackson.

It is also on "A Secret Life Of Banjo" cd.

(This is a solo banjo cd, but it has many wonderful tunes and banjos on it and is not at all boring)

There are no lyrics to this tune--I just tried to play it in a way that evoked my feelings about Andrew Jackson. :)

I'll write more later about Ponce de Leon and Achilles Murat. :)
