Dating Slingerland

Any help dating a Slingerland Maybell - 22 frets - open backed - serial number 220?   No marks of any resonator fitting.   Can you use standard tenor strings?   I've enjoyed reading the forums - now I bit the bullet and joined.  Thanks for the help, Tom
