Bio updated 1/9/2014 I've been playing bluegrass banjo for 48 years plus. My first and only teacher was Dr. Donald ZEPP back when he was Mr. Zepp, in Haddonfield, New Jersey. Later in 1965 I left New Jersey and settled in southern California, in the land of Doug Dillard, Don Parmley, and Pat Cloud, After college I played professionally in the California Zephyr band for 10 years, traveled all over and worked with Mr. Monroe on several memorable occasions. I calculate that over the years I've played about one million notes, give or take.... I took up instrument construction in the late 1960's, primarily building F-5 mandolins and banjo necks. Lately I've been building acoustic guitars as well. Check out my articles on pearl inlay and instrument bone preparation. My principal contribution to the more recent banjo world is that in 1996 I started the Banjo-L mailing list, arguably the sire of all internet banjo sites including this one. I transferred ownership in 2003, have also found it difficult to keep up with all that is new (and old) with the venerable instrument but try whenever possible. I retired from my day job in 2013 and I plan to increase my BH and music involvement, and lutherie work, in the next months and years..
