Fiddle & Banjo workshops Gainsborough 2009

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

Here I am now wading through the aftermath of the 2009 FOAOTMAD Fiddle & banjo workshops session which took place in Gainsborough UK during two weekends in November. Tabs to write out. Video to edit and then recreate as DVDs. Dave Bing and Gerry Milnes were the tutors. They each taught one day banjo and one day fiddle during both weekends so students had a good variety. For the beginners weekend

At Intermediate banjo Gerry taught "Getting upstairs", "Mushrat", "The Old Woman Quarreling and Her Man" and "Bloody Red River". Dave Bing taught "jenny Lind", "Going Down Hamburg" and "Creek's All Muddy".

Intermediate Fiddle Gerry  taught "Melvyn Wine's Blackberry Blossom", "Shelvin Rock", "Nancy Ann", "John Lovers Gone". Dave taught "Possum on a Rail", "Going Down Hamburg" and "Glory At the meeting House".

I posted a picture of me having a litle jam with Dave and Gerry during the beginners weekend. It only lasted abut two hours. Cast in order of appearance from left to right Gerry, Me, Al Smith, Dave Bing.

I posted another photo of the Saturday night jam session at the intermediate weekend. Dave Bing, Gerry Milnes and John Preston are all in there.

It was a great weekend, some great tunes and really good teachers. Hard work and sustained concentrated effort though. Added interest was the presence of documentary film makers collecting footage.

Next excitement is Adam Hurt comes to visit next week on his way to Holland. So we are getting ready for that. He is coming to the folk club I run but  not to gig as a guest  - just as an observer to enjoy the ambience and listen to other folks for a bit of a change. I am sure he will play  bit too. I'll try and get some pics to put up.

Been playing OT banjo since 1950s off and on. Love all kinds of music. OT banjo is what I do for me. My wife Patsy plays clawhammer also autoharp and guitar. We usually play as a duo. I run The Wolf Folk Club near King's Lynn, Norfolk, England. I have several banjo pupils and one or two fiddle pupils.
