I started playing five string banjo while in high school in California during the "folk scare" of the 1960s. Although I later "switched" to guitar and gave more attention to it (teaching it for 25 years), I never gave up the banjo. Although the few lessons I had were from a Bluegrass player, frailing is my default mode. I rarely play other players' arrangements, enjoying the challenge of figuring out my own way. I rarely play out or jam any more, though I do occasionally get out to hear live music. Update: BAS has struck. In addition to the Gariepy, which I've owned since high school, there are two new family members, a Bowlin fretless, which I was able to get from John Bowlin in person in Washinton, and a slightly used (now more used) Wildwood. Both are fine instruments, very different from one another. The Gariepy is about to go into dry dock for major clean-up and renovation.
