Interests:
[Teaching] [Jamming] [Socializing] [Helping]
Occupation: Musician
Gender: Male
Age: 67
My Instruments:
I play banjos made by Kevin Enoch and Bob Momich. Most times, I play a 1949 Gibson J-45, but when I travel by air, I take a dreadnaught-sized Voyage-Air guitar. (It folds up to fit in the overhead of most any plane, and unfolds to be a great instrument.) My fiddle was restored and given to me by Jim White, of Raleigh, NC.

I appeared frequently on A Prairie Home Companion, and was honored to be a featured singer on the Transatlantic Sessions tour in the United Kingdom with fiddler Aly Bain and Dobro master Jerry Douglas, and again at the debut of the Transatlantic Sessions at Merlefest. In addition to performing solo, I play in a duo with mandolin icon Mike Compton, and also perform with fiddler and step-dancer April Verch. I am the recipient of the songwriting prize for “Gospel Recorded Performance” at the 2012 IBMA Awards for my song “Singing As We Rise,” and co-writer (with Eric Gibson) of the 2013 IBMA Song of the Year for "They Called It Music." I also do solo and studio work, and teach and perform at festivals at home and abroad. For more about yours truly, go to http://joenewberry.me
