I certainly am no expert, and novice might be to high of a title as well, when it comes to the banjo. But I can tell you that using a microphone and recording myself on my computer has opened my eyes and ears. I have seen, and heard, the light. I knew my music didn't sound great, but I didn't know how it truly sounded. Especially when I am thinking about the notes and what to do with my left hand and what to do with my right hand. Even though I appreciated good playing, I have a better appreciation for it. Just listening to my songs in an MP3 file makes me understand some of where I go wrong.
If you're just starting out, like me, I would recommend that you record yourself. Don't expect perfection and you won't be disappointed. But use it to hear what others hear and use it to get better.
I appreciate the comments left.... and the well wishs as well. This is truly a great community to begin the banjo in.

I've always loved music, but was never taleneted and decided to buy my Father-in-Laws banjo and learn. When I'm not pickin' I like watching football and being with my family.
