It's been a few years since I started tackling the banjo. I'll admit, I've quit a few times, rid myself of a problematic Fender five-string, and let more than a year pass before trying again. Now, I've got a fresh lease on my own parcel of banjo territory.
It started with a different banjo that my band procured for me because they wanted "that sound" back in our mix. Plenty of searching followed, but it ended (and began, I suppose) with a 1976 Ibanez Artist with a sweet maple res and neck. It's case was tired and a tinge musty, but the old girl had some serious charm and playability. She's been cleaned up, had a pickup installed for gig use, and she's leaning on her stand just a foot from my knee. I'm warming up to her, am wanting to slip the IPad on a nearby shelf, and get back after it. A good sign.
