Key of D – aDADE
In this, tunetorial number 48, Dan "Clawdan" Levenson teaches Ducks on The Millpond.
Once a common jam session tune, this one isn’t played as often as it was. BUT it is a very cool and simple tune. You can play it just as sparse as you please or fancy it up a bit as Dan does here.
Tommy Jarrell and Kyle Creed play probably the most iconic version of this tune on Tommy’s “June Apple” recording and for an even cleaner version, listen to Kyle Creed’s solo version on Clawhammer Banjo Volume 1. For a more modern version, Dan LOVES the Horseflies one from their “Bound for Glory” radio recording (but that is a pass around tape, if you can find a copy). And Greg Hooven’s version form the Galax 1990 jam tape is another great one.
For a little variety listen to Wade Ward’s from his Field Recorders’ recording. AND Brad Leftwich has a clean fiddle version in his Old Time Fiddle Round Peak Style (a Mel Bay book). Yes, Dan has a few others in his library... you won’t have trouble finding this one. Oh, and don’t confuse it with “Ducks on a Pond” which is a VERY different tune.
