This is a very special parts banjo. The nickel-plated parts are all new Goldstar/Golden Gate. The foundation of the banjo is a Jerry Sloan archtop tone ring on a Richard Guggenheim (Norwich CT) block mahogany rim. It’s a beautiful sounding marriage. Jerry was making tone rings for the (now deceased) banjo builder/luthier Richard Criswell in Monticello,Ky. They had a well-established business relationship where Richard would make his banjos and Jerry would provide him with his tone rings. However, because they were going into the Criswell Classic line of banjos they did not have a JBS/sloan etching on them; instead they have “Criswell Classic” engraved on the inside of the ring. This has been confirmed by Jerry that these are his rings. The banjo comes with a Gretsch neck that I refinished, dressed the frets and fitted to the pot. I put a special finish on the neck that is slick as glass. It's a great playing hard maple neck with a good weight for resonance. The pot includes all Golden Gate parts and a 5-Star head that I’ve had stored for 40 years. The resonator has WBW binding and is finished with Dupli-Color color shift automotive paint that shifts colors between purple & green. I then clear coated over the finish. It is very cool. The only flaw found on the banjo is in the color shift paint. Once you put it down, you really can’t go back over any area that need correcting. I have 2 tiny areas that didn’t take the coat exactly like I wanted. However, we are perfectionist, so the two small areas aren’t perfect, but they're barely noticeable. The clear coat is perfect. RR ties on frets 7,8,9. New hardshell case. Of course you need to hear it! I have a comparison of this banjo with 2 other banjos.
