If you have always wanted a prewar Gibson Resonator banjo but wanted to save some money or your back the financial and gravitational strain often associated with such instruments, check this out.
This banjo started out as a Gibson TB-00 tenor banjo, and it retains the original finish, one piece Dohler Flange (some slight pull is visible on the flange by the neck), Grover Window Pane Tailpiece with complete with it’s often misplaced cover. It has the thin 1/2” rim, which is beveled where it comes in contact with the head. As typical of these banjos, it has flat hooks and a thin, non notched tension hoop. All rim hardware appears original, and it has been fitted with a “Pre-EPA” Remo Frosted Plastic Head.
The original tenor neck is in excellent condition and is included in the sale, but currently the instrument sports a nice conversion neck made by Ken Spiers of Alaska. The tuners are a more modern version of the classic “pancake” design and it has a friction fifth peg. The nut, which I was told is bone that has been colored black to resemble the original wooden nut, has width is 1-3/16”.
Sonically, this is a versatile instrument. I found it very pleasing as a clawhammer and two finger style instrument with plenty of volume to cut through a loud jam. You can put on your picks and kick off “Down the Road” on it too, though not quite as loudly as it’s Mastertone Brethren would. It weighs a comfortable 6.8 lbs, about four pounds less than the closest Mastertone style banjo I could grab.
This will ship in a solid modern hard shell case. I have the original tenor case and would be happy to include that in the case as well, though it might require an additional shipping change. We’ll talk about it if you decide you’d like to own the instrument.
