I've recently acquired this wonderfully inlaid, finely built, rare high end Boston banjo from William Cole, which I believe dates from 1897 or thereabouts.
Has 10.5" diameter rim w/ Eclipse tone-ring; black painted exterior, possibly refinished; original shoes with replaced hooks and nuts.
Original Elite tailpiece shows signs of repair. The 27" scale neck features gorgeous engraved pearl inlay throughout, with a butterfly at the fifth fret, and a boat heel with fine carving. Light typical surface wear on the neck profile.
A small crack is present on the peghead overlay. Replaced frets are in good shape. The tuners are metal friction pegs with pearl buttons. Currently it is strung with nylon strings & skin head. Just set up for optimal playability. Price is $4000 firm + actual shipping, or pickup in Chicago.
Thanks for looking.
