***SOLD FOR $705***
***IMPORTANT UPDATE: 8 October -- If you prefer to purchase this banjo WITHOUT the Comfort Bevel armrest, I will knock off $40 from the asking price of $745, making this sale price $705 before factoring in shipping costs. ***
For your consideration is a circa-2021 Zachary Hoyt 5-string, short-scale, open-back banjo. This banjo features a gorgeous cherry wood rim & neck with a persimmon fingerboard and a black walnut peghead overlay, rim cap, heel cap & neck center stripe.
This banjo is fitted with a Renaissance head on an 11-inch block rim with a "wood tone-ring" profile. I upgraded this banjo with a select tropical hardwood Comfort Bevel armrest (you can thank me later) which nicely compliments the persimmon fingerboard. The scale length is a comfortably short 23-inches and the nut is 1-3/8 inches wide. The neck has a two-way truss rod accessed from the heel, brass dot fret markers in the fingerboard, long-lasting & beautiful looking gold EVO fret wire, and raw brass Gotoh 4:1 ratio geared tuning pegs.
The neck and block rim sport a nice Tru-Oil finish (a polymerized tung oil). There is a brass plate on the dowel stick with the banjo’s serial number (#188), the maker’s name, and the year and place of manufacture. The banjo is currently set up with a tall 5th-string pip to raise that string to the same level as the accompanying strings. Also, a very nice Sullivan “Roasted Maple” .656 bridge has been installed.
Zachary Hoyt crafted the Van Eps-style brass tension hoop as well as the dowel stick yoke. The tailpiece, tuners and Ren head come from Smakula Fretted Instruments with the balance of the hardware being supplied by Balsam Banjo Works. A mint-condition Superior brand gig bag accompanies this banjo.
This banjo is currently strung with John Pearse brand “John Hartford” heavy-gauge strings (with a wound .018 third string). I use these strings to allow me to tune a bit lower than standard pitch to get a nice growl out of it. In this low tuning with the Sullivan bridge and Renaissance head, the banjo sounds superb – very resonant and loud. If you like, however, I can re-string this banjo with whatever gauge strings you desire, your choice!
NOTE: To afford you every conceivable viewing angle of this lovely instrument, I included a few of Zachary Hoyt’s studio photographs of this banjo when new (and without the arm rest that I later installed). Sold new, these Zachary Hoyt banjos command well over $1,000. I am heavily discounting this near-mint instrument to a REDUCED asking price of just $745! (See ***IMPORTANT UPDATE*** above for reduced price offer) And sorry but -- NO TRADES.
