For sale a walnut 1928 Gibson Florentine TB forty hole archtop serial 9139-4 converted to five string. Has all original parts to the banjo including it’s four string Gibson Florentine tailpiece and it’s original tenor neck. The five string neck was built by Kansas City luthier Mr Keith George who installed the mother of pearl and abalone Florentine design that covers the full width of each fret on the fretboard. The paint and neck carvings are the work of Mr Ron Raymer, and matches the banjo perfectly. The Florentine flower bouquet stone work on the peghead by renowned banjo producer Mr Greg Rich which can only be described as outstanding work. This banjo not only is beautiful in appearance but has great tone, volume and projection and is set up for ease of playing. The banjo has a five string gold plated tailpiece engraved “Florentine” to clone the appearance of the original four string tailpiece which comes stored in the case compartment. One of the original tension hooks has been replaced (it is stored in the case). I have also replaced the leather washers in the original peg head tuners which are smooth, accurate and work beautifully. The banjo is 94 years old, it has obviously been a much loved instrument and well cared and is in great shape with very minor indications of it’s age. The banjo comes in a sturdy hardshell case. The banjo’s history passed to me from the previous owner is that it was ordered and bought new by Betty Pierce who was a vaudeville performer and an actress in a Charlie Chaplin silent movie. The tenor neck has the truss rod cover engraved “Betty Pierce” (see picture). This Gibson Florentine is listed on the Banjo Philes website for 1928 see banjophiles.com/SerNumData/9XXX.htm
This is a truly quite remarkable instrument for it’s sound, playability and outstanding appearance. I have many more photos if requested.
I have just now recorded my friend Gaylon Harper who called by to play the banjo for the clip to give an idea of its sound G, C & D. youtube.com/watch?v=D_v2jC8cGos
