This banjo was built near the end of Gibson production in Kalamazoo, Michigan. According to Banjophiles.com, this serial number is from the mid to late 1960's.
It is a 20 hole flathead. The original Gibson stamped tuners are on strings one and four, while strings two and three have Keith D-tuners that work well. The fifth string tuner is a factory installed Kroll, which itself has become sought after. The rim is full thickness.
I've disassembled the banjo entirely for cleaning and inspection and have installed a new WeatherKing high crown head. The bridge is a Purcell, organ wood, 5/8", standard spaced. The strings are brand new Huber medium lights. Spikes are at 7 and 10.
Fret wear is minimal to moderate; the wood finish has very few cosmetic blemishes; the plating has moderate patina consistent with the age of the banjo.
I've installed a '70's vintage Kershner tailpiece that is extremely solid and functional. The original Gibson logo tailpiece is missing.
The case is the original Gibson logo hardshell. There has been minor repair to the handle. The interior is in good condition. West Virginia sticker inside the resonator lends a bit of hardcore credibility to the life this banjo has experienced.
A very nice playing and fine sounding piece of banjo history at a reasonable price.
PRICING CONSIDERATIONS: KEITH D-TUNERS - $150 VALUE
(2) GIBSON STAMPED TUNERS - $100 VALUE
KROLL GEARED FIFTH - $125 VALUE
VINTAGE GIBSON LOGO CASE - $200 VALUE
IF YOU DON'T WANT THE KEITH AND GIBSON TUNERS, OR THE GIBSON CASE, I CAN ADJUST THE PRICE OF THE RB-250 ACCORDINGLY. I AM RELUCTANT TO REMOVE THE FIFTH PEG, SINCE THE KROLL SHAFT AND A MODERN REPLACEMENT ARE'NT USUALLY THE SAME SIZE.
I'LL REPLACE THE TUNERS WITH A NEW SET OF STANDARD TUNING MACHINES AND THE CASE WITH A COMPARABLE HARDSHELL CASE.
