For your consideration is the ultimately adjustable (and extremely cool looking!) Tensionator tailpiece. I was using a Tensionator on one of my banjos that has since left my stable (i.e., it was sold). I had pretty good luck with these tailpieces, especially on banjos where the string-to-string volume/tone needed to be dialed in to help smooth out the overall sound. I'm currently using a "finger" style tailpiece on one of my banjos but instead it's a copy of the old Oettinger design -- a bit different looking than the Tensionator but achieving the same end result.
Anyway, if you are so inclined to explore a tailpiece such as this, just know the company ABM of Germany is no longer making the Tensionator, and whatever Bob Smakula has in his rapidly dwindling Tensionator stock is priced considerably higher than my asking price of $95. When they've disappeared from the market, used Tensionators will become scarcer than hen's teeth, and considerably more expensive due to their rarity.
