Up for sale is an extremely rare 1950s dreadnought flat top guitar, made by Premier in New Jersey. These were well-made guitars sold by multivox corporation. They were made right across the river from guild guitars, and there is probably some cross pollination of techniques and craftsmen between the 2 factories! This guitar sounds amazing… It has tremendous volume and a warm but punchy tone, and can hold its own in any Bluegrass Jam! The neck is solid mahogany, with a full “D” profile. Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard and bridge. Mahogany back and sides. The back is arched like Some of the vintage Guild guitars. X-braced pattern very close to Martin pattern, with straight tapered braces and small maple bridgeplate. There is a serial number on the small metal plate on back of the peg head, as well as the number “58-18” stamped in the neck block. Premier made mostly arch top guitars, and I’ve only seen one picture of another flat top guitar like this one, I believe the model is A100. This model was made from 1956 until 1960. This one was possibly made in 1958, judging from the number stamped in the neck block. Cool original Waverly tuners and even cooler original tweed hard shell case! The tuners and case alone are worth half of what I’m asking for the guitar!
The guitar was re-topped with a beautiful set of bookmatched 100-year old Adirondack Red Spruce top, re-using the original bracing, and the guitar is loud, responsive and resonant. The guitar is all -original save for the top and top binding, which was replaced. The rest of the binding is cracked and ugly, but is staying in place so far. The celluloid pick guard is original but is slightly curling. The biggest negative is that the top finish (which is fairly new lacquer) sometimes develops a waxy shine in spots which can be buffed off. This effect is diminishing as time goes by.
