This is a reconstructed zither banjo. I believe the neck to have come from England. It has been fitted to an open back block rim. The zither banjo is different in that it has a tunneled fifth string that is connected to a slotted head with six tuning machines. The head is suspended inside the rim and the hide head is sitting on a cast iron tone ring. Tension adjustment is done from the top. In my experience most zither banjos were closed back banjos and thus had a form of built in resonator. The tone is brilliant rather than muted. They can be loud.
I received this banjo with worn out tuners. I have replaced them with modern Rubner tuners, which are excellent - I have retrofitted them on a classical guitar and a mandolin as upgrades. I had to peg the old holes in order to use modern standard spacing.
It is a sort of conversation piece and fun to play. Scale length is about 27½ inches. I cannot tell you what woods it is constructed from!
PS - there is no case.
