From my research, the Ludwig banjo line existed from 1925 until 1933. No doubt it was a victim of the depression because this is a high quality instrument in every aspect.
I suspect that this is a very early example for two reasons. The patent pending neck attachment hardware, and the perfectly round brass tension hoop. The later models had the top tension hoop made of pot metal, which crumbles with age. For this reason Ludwigs are hard to find in this condition, which is far closer to “new” than to “good”,the two choices offered by Facebook.
This banjo was refretted and looks like the neck was refinished by Bob George, well respected Kansas City luthier,in 1985. He left a sticker in the resonator attesting to his work and he also mounted one of his bridges,a work of art in itself made of a piano soundboard inlaid with bone.
It also has the original prewar planet tuners which are too often sold off of the Ludwigs. This banjo is really a gem and includes a period correct tenor case in decent condition.
