This 2011 DP Hopkins “Phoenix” is one of DP Hopkins’ top-of-the-line models – engraved and gold-plated, with the finest very curly maple and ebony fretboard. Gold-plated Keith D-Tuners are installed, and you can also have the original tuners. The rim is a Tony Pass non-thin-skirt birch rim. The tone ring is the type that only comes with Hopkins high-end banjos (and can’t be bought separately). Spikes are at 7th, 9th, and 10th frets. The 5th string tuner is Hopkins' invention -- no protruding string end!
Paul Hopkins replaced the arm rest, buffed the back of the resonator, replaced the head, and set up the banjo, in 2019. Other than wear on the frets and a slight bit of surface tarnish of the hardware, this banjo is difficult to distinguish from a brand new one.
You can choose one of these bridges: (1) the original (with Hopkins’ logo), made by Gary Sosebee – his “cotton mill” type, but with graduated height (per Hopkins’ specifications) from 5/8” at the 1st string to .656 at the 5th string; (2) a Scorpion (Silvio Ferretti) 5/8” bridge, or (3) a Scorpion 5/8” Crowe-spaced bridge. (Scorpions for maximum "crack"; Sosebee for a little thicker tone.)
