This is truly a one-of-a-kind banjo that deserves someone other than me. I'll never do it justice. While this is a traditional Deering Golden Era model, this was a custom build by Greg Deering's craftsmen using very exotic and endangered Hawaiian Koa Wood and rare New Zealand Abalone for the custom inlays.

I had finally located my Viet Nam Era Marine Corps buddy that lit my banjo fire back then with his banjo expertise. I told him that after 50 years I finally bought a banjo, described it to him, sent him photos, and then learned he actually helped build it when he worked at Deering. A few months later I met him in San Diego and we went to Deering for a great day with Greg and his craftsmen in the shop reviewing their incredible craftmanship on this Koa Golden Era. I have a photo of me and the banjo with Greg and another craftsman that also helped building it.

They were all in awe of its mint condition.....Mint Condition, because I've tried and tried to learn, but haven't the time to put in it, and my technical mind just can't grasp the complexity of the chords, where they all reside for their own reasons, and what the progressions up and downscale are. I tried to find logic in it, but with too many mind barriers .... I guess hours and hours of repetition with a teacher is what it takes ....and I haven't been able to commit to that. As a result, I don't deserve this incredible instrument....I have the passion, just no talent. It kills me to lose it, but it needs to be played by someone with talent. My Deering Goodtime Special will have to do as I hopefully find time in the future to learn.I've always wanted to be proficient with a's beautiful magic to me.

I have provenance in the form of original design drawings for the special inlays. The Pineapple on the "Haolewood" banjo headstock is, I believe, the only one they've ever done and all the headstock and neck inlays are of a rare New Zealand Abalone. This design along with the Koa Wood is one-of-kind. ("Haole" per Oxford Dictionary usually pronounced "Howleey")"(in Hawaii) a person who is not a native Hawaiian, especially a white person. Anyone from the mainland U.S.")

It features a famous and highly respected Paul Ebbe Custom Bronze Tone Ring for a truly unique sound. The physical specs are as shown for the basic Deering Golden Era model. I've had a famous banjo instructor/player play it once and the comments on the sound are off-the charts....uniquely rich, mellow yet bright, etc.. Part of the difference is the Koa Wood and EBBE's Bronze Tone Ring.

It's so beautiful I can't fathom wearing on or scratching the resonator as most well-used banjos show. There's not a scratch or wear mark on the resonator, the metal has been kept polished, and the drum head shows no wear. It literally has less that 8 total practice hours on it. Having my own job plus running a horse farm for my wife leaves little time to master this.

I'd prefer a local sale in nearby states to deliver it personally, but if I have to ship it, it'll be insured and packed to survive. The $300 upgraded Deering well-padded hard case in great condition is included in the price. I'm not a retailer and the banjo is as advertised, so the sale is final, with no refund, no return, no exchange.

I can get more photos, just haven't had any sunshine here in Northern Virginia in several the brilliance of the inlays and wood sometimes are downplayed in the photos vs. in real natural light. Please email me with your questions and phone if desired.

Shipping Cost by Buyer is Maximum $200 USPS or UPS to Lower 48. Both quote $205 to Lower 48 and $408 to Alaska or Hawaii and I'll pay $100 of the $400 for you in AK or HI. These rates always seem to change lower at the counter, you'll pay only the lower actual.
