A beautiful classic-era 5-string banjo by W. A. Cole of Boston, Mass. It features a beautiful one-piece mahogany neck with "boat" style heel, an ebony fretboard with a 27" scale length and mother-of-pearl inlays, and an 11" spun-over rim with a remo renaissance head.
This banjo has been recently restored and set up to look feel and play wonderfully. The neck has been refinished using a hand-rubbed true-oil finish giving it a smooth feel and warm satin luster. All but four of the 24 tension nuts are original. The no-knot tailpiece and most of the hooks are high-quality North American made replacements. The headstock features vintage celluloid friction pegs. The fifth string tuner is a new friction tuner. It has a new bone nut and 5th string pip, and there have been minor repairs to the area around the fifth string nut (see photo).
The neck is straight and the banjo is currently set up with light gauge Nylgut strings (tuned in standard G-tuning) and a 5/8" bridge with 1/4" action at the 12th fret. This action may seem high to players accustomed to steel strings, but it is standard for classic-era banjos and the instrument plays easily. The action could be lowered to ~3/16" with a 1/2" bridge without any other alterations if preferred.
This elegant banjo is over one hundred years old and is now ready to be enjoyed for its next hundred years.
