If you're in the market for an exceptionally good sounding OPF AT pot, this is it. I played this banjo for years with a left-handed maple neck which I have removed. The rim is a nice, 3-piece, steam-bent, hard rock maple Cooperman that I would estimate is 10 years old. (Cooperman rims need at least a year or so to dry out.)
Speaking as a long time rim maker, after much experimentation with various rims, this particular rim sounded the best to me.... with this particular tone ring.
(Note: There is no perfect rim for every tone ring. Tone rings sound different with different rims. The acoustic outcome is a combination of the rim weight, dimension, and the density of the rim material.)
I think the mid-80's 40 hole Gold Star archtop rings were some of the best AT's ever made. Over the past 35-40 years, I have tried them all and this one always sounded right to me. It was full-sounding and loud without being being obnoxious and screechy-bright.
I prefer the 5 Star head with these AT's because I think it pulls the bass out better and gives it a rounder, more balanced sound.
