This is a very solid 1927 Gibson no-hole archtop conversion, serial #8834-91, with the power and versatility that these banjos are known for. It has a Frank Neat Style-3 neck correct for this model, with rosewood fretboard, stainless steel frets, German ABM tuners from Bob Smakula, and spikes from 6 to 10 installed by Mr. Neat. There is a small scuff on either side of the neck where the heel meets the resonator, but otherwise the finish is quite good. Of the remaining hardware only the armrest is newer (Prucha), though I believe that the grooved tension hoop—while it is a prewar E2—may not be original to this instrument: from what I have researched, most ‘27 TB-3 archtops had a notched hoop. This banjo has a punched prewar Presto tailpiece, and is currently set up with a Remo head and a Purcell roasted maple bridge. It has a smooth low action, and comes with an almost new hard case. The original 4-string neck with its tuners still in place is included, as well as the tenor case, but the strap (shown) is not.
These prewar Gibson no-hole archtops do not come on the market very often, so you may wonder why—if this banjo is so great—I am selling. It is because I have two of them, and am looking to add a flattop to round out my addiction.
