Video link in the “more info” url below. Bought on eBay about 2 years ago. Appears to be oak construction and possibly a one-off home made banjo. It is very well made. The neck is a dream to play. I don’t know the maker but whoever made it had experience in instrument making because it does not feel like a home made instrument.
It has held together and functioned very well in the time that I’ve owned it. I replaced the tuners which didn’t hold very well at all and also “upgraded” the tone ring. It used to just have a piece of wood for a tone ring but I’ve installed a piece of stovepipe a la’ Frank Profitt and it has really upped this banjo’s game.
Currently has a brand new set of Ome Heavy strings and is tuned to D. Frankly, John Hartford Low D strings sound far better.
It is a flush fret so if you are thinking of stepping into the fretless or mountain banjo world, this is a perfect opportunity.
It has a crack that runs across the front but this has been stable the entire time that I’ve owned.
I don’t know the age but I would describe it as “vintage” for sure.
