Overview:

This exceptionally fine 1934 TB11 conversion is catalog spec with a full thickness, 3-ply rim with one-piece flange (OPF) construction. The wood and metal and on the pot on this banjo are in excellent condition. The original prewar tone hoop makes this banjo very light weight; without sacrificing tone. Those of you who are very familiar with these banjos know that most of them have issues with the blue paint flaking-off, this banjo does not have this issue at all the paint is original and beautiful. This banjo was purchased from the nephew of the original owner, who obviously took very good care of this instrument. This banjo is in great shape for a banjo that is 85 years old!

The Pot:

Everything on this pot is original with the exception of the tailpiece that has been upgraded from the Grover “Window pane” to a prewar Grover “Pat Presto”. The original window tailpiece is in the case pocket and will be included in the sale. When I have conversion necks made I have the heel of the new neck narrowed slightly, so none of the prewar material needs to be removed from the neck notch of the resonator. The one-piece flange flat and solid. The silkscreen design on the back of the “mother of toilet seat (MOT)” resonator is vibrant and unscratched. The original two-piece armrest, tension hoop, hooks/nuts, etc are all original and are in excellent condition. The rim is uncut and the banjo retains its original tone hoop.

The Neck:

The conversion neck was made to prewar spec and blue-color match. The headstock overlay is Ebony and fingerboard was done in Brazilian rosewood with a “Style 75” pattern headstock, “Style 1” fingerboard. This cool combination that I have seen on a very rare original RB75. This neck was made by Richie Dotson, who has carved-out a solid reputation for making true-to-spec Prewar necks. Richie is a tremendous luthier, and he does a lot of work for Jim Mills, Turtle Hill and others. Really top notch.

The conversion neck is has original 1920s Grover “Pancake” Tuners. These are my favorite tuner and have a 2:1 ratio. The original tuners for this model banjo are Grover “two tabs” and they are still attached to the original tenor neck that is included with the sale.

The Price

I am pricing this banjo at $4,200. The price includes the converted banjo, tenor neck with extra tuners, and vintage Lifton (orange-lined) hardshell case.
