Circa 1927, based on the serial number info I could find. This is a one-owner banjo, and he played it professionally for years. It's been kept in its case since he passed away and the family has decided to sell it. It's in remarkable condition for it's age, and appears all original, including the alligator case.
This is a striking example of the artistry that went into some of the banjos of the 20's and 30's.
extensive marquetry in the resonator
carved neck heel
multi-color laminates in the neck
Engraved gold plated hardware
Engraved pearloid headstock and fretboard
The frets have minimal wear and the action is about 2.5 mm at the 12th fret with a 5/8" tall bridge. The engraving on the fretboard is only minimally worn or faded in a couple very small places. The laminates are all solid.
All the hardware is gold and engraved.
Hand carved neck heel
Pat. Apl. For and 5955 stamped on the flange
The flaws are few and normal for its age but include:
Minor finish checking inside the rim in a couple places
Darkening of the purfling at the back end of the resonator, maybe caused by the case getting damp at the bottom edge
Wear on the armrest
Case is in fair to good condition. The big pocket cover is loose in the case and the handle was replaced. The case is solid and the latches are good.
This banjo is ready to play, and the family is hoping it goes to someone who will enjoy it as much as their father did.
