The Paramount Style F Model Tenor Banjo (1924), made in New York City, with natural varnish finish, rosewood resonator, rim and neck, original black zippered hard shell case in near mint condition. Banjo has been in my possession for many years and has not been refinished or touched in any manner. This may be one of the finest examples of a Paramount F banjo available today. The reason I do not say mint is it is missing one thumb screw on the armrest. There is no wear on the back of neck or frets and all the fine detailed inlays are in immaculate condition. The banjo still has the original Rogers skin head intact...it is truly a time capsule. It comes with its original case with the zippered lining and an original Paramount Catalog from that time period.
The fancy Paramount Style F tenor banjo is the highest grade model in William Lange's professional banjo line. The neck, rim and resonator of this banjo are all made of Indian rosewood much of it with an amazing swirling grain pattern. The resonator back is not laminated-it is made of two substantial solid slabs of bookmatched rosewood.
Every surface is richly decorated with elaborate colored wood marquetry and laminated underlay, with the dark natural finished rosewood setting off the chain pattern wood edging, wood binding, and brightly colored marquetry inlay. All metal parts are gold plated and elaborately hand engraved. The multilaminate rosewood neck with colored wood center strips has a fully carved heel, carved peghead back and multilayered wood marquetry trim and binding. The headstock face and fingerboard have extremely fancy engraved pearl inlay.
This banjo remains in very fine original condition, showing only minor wear on the armrest and no known alterations. The finish shows no wear or checking. Even the oft-flaking clear lacquer over the engraved pearl on the headstock face is completely intact.
The heavy gold plating has a lovely deep amber patina. The typically very thin original Paramount frets are intact with very little wear. The fine engraving on the fingerboard inlays appear in fine condition.
This is one of the finest examples of a high-grade Paramount F and a truly stunning piece of 1920's banjo history.
