Lyon & Healy was a huge maker and distributor of musical instruments in the first half of the 20th century - everything from ukuleles to orchestral harps. During this period they issued a line of instruments stamped “own make” to indicate the instruments that were made in the home factory in Chicago.
This excellent example was made in that Chicago factory along with Washburn brand instruments and features a maple neck and 22 bracket rim with the Lange style elevated tone ring. The carved peg head overlay is the same Art Deco design as the Style B mandolin and the ebony fretboard features pearl position dots at the 3,5,7,10,12 & 15th frets. The calf skin head is 10 5/8” in diameter and produces a distinctly old-time sound.
The tailpiece is original and the tuning machines have been replaced with modern planetary tuners and a geared 5th string.
If you’re looking for a traditional sounding banjo with the accuracy of modern tuning machines, this is the obvious choice.
