Raphael Ciani was the uncle of world renowned master luthier John D’Angelico. D’Angelico apprenticed under his uncle starting at 9 years of age. One can easily see that the high quality of luthiery was definitely a family tradition.
This gorgeous-in-every-detail mandolin bears the hallmarks of excellence. The intricate peg head bears presentation grade mother of pearl inlay pattern, so typical of Italian design. The fret board is like-wise inlaid with delicate designs in mother of pearl. In addition, the top has an inlaid rosette with an inset pick guard whereupon we find an inlay of two angels playing a lyre. The segmented bridge even has a pearl dot in each end piece. Four-on-a-plate tuners with pearl buttons complete the picture as seen from the front.
But wait, we’re not done yet! The back of the instrument is comprised of 36 ribs of Brazilian rosewood with a thin maple strip separating each rib. on the back of the peg head is the tuning machine cover plate engraved with leaves, stems and a wild rose.
In superb condition and remarkably clean for an almost 100 year old treasure.
