Selling my father's Gibson Mastertone banjo from 1929. The photo on the profile is him with the banjo circa 1935. I have had it appraised at $4200 by Gryphon in Palo Alto.

Hearts & Flowers head and Bella Voce fret inlays. Original case.

"Instrument: Tenor banjo Maker: Gibson
Model/Style: TB-4
Serial No: 9271-4 Case: Plectrum size, same period as this banjo
Vintage: 1929

This banjo conforms to Gibson's catalog description and illustration of the TB-4 tenor model, with 40-hole archtop tone ring, 2-piece flange, mahogany neck and resonator and chrome-plated metal parts, There are two important differences on this model: While the headstock has the standard "Hearts & Flowers" inlay designs, the fingerboard has the "Bella Voce" inlays. This banjo also apparently came equipped with Gibson's "Vibrato Tone-Master" armrest activated mute, which is in place with all its parts.

Finish appears to be original on both neck and resonator. There is wear through the lacquer to bare wood behind the lower frets, with assorted small nicks and dings to headstock edges. Finish on the shell is excellent, but there are two driver's license numbers engraved into the lacquer below the Gibson Mastertone decal. There are two areas of significant wear to the back of the resonator which appear to have been caused by the lower cradle supports of a stand. Chrome metal plating on metal parts is excellent. Original Grover tuners are functional, resonator mounting hardware and Presto tailpiece are complete. Hooks and nuts set complete except for one hook. Armrest is slightly bent on either side of the center support, which is also the fulcrum for the mute arm which goes through the shell.

Alterations or Repairs:
None are apparent. If mute was removed, and armrest replaced, the only sign of the mute having been present would be the small hole through the shell (internal mounting of the mute does not alter the interior of the shell).
Original calfskin head has been replaced with standard plastic head.

Other banjos from this 9271 batch have been reported as having the Bella Voce fingerboard inlays with Hearts & Flowers headstock inlays.
This is an original Gibson case, but for a plectrum model."
