Fairbanks Electric No. 0 #19968
Outstanding circa 1900 A.C. Fairbanks Electric No. 0, serial #19968 in very good condition. Included are 2 sets of original tuners, a hardshell case and its original canvas “duck” case if the buyer wants it. Price for everything is $1900 plus $100 UPS ground shipping to lower CONUS, also the 3% PayPal fee if that is used for payment.
This banjo has the ideal configuration of a 10 3/4” head and a 26 1/4” scale. Neck width at nut is 1-3/16", at pot 1-15/16". String height at 12th fret is 3/16". Of course it has the famous Electric tone ring which would soon morph into the Whyte Laydie tone ring. It was produced when the quality of Fairbanks banjos was at its height. You won’t find a better conditioned example from this period anywhere.
This banjo has had very little done to it in its lifetime. It has its original hardware, original finish, original engraved pearl, etc. It has had a small piece of binding replaced and some minor cosmetic work done on the headstock. It came with two sets of tuners, the original ivoroid tuners plus a set of metal patent tuners, including the 5th string.
Because I wanted to play it with steel strings, I had a set of PegHed geared tuners professionally installed. I also installed a reproduction No Knot tailpiece to accommodate the steel strings. Should you wish, it would be easy to reinstall either set of the original tuners.
The banjo comes with a black Guardian hard case. The interior cover has no lid, but a shaving kit fits perfectly. Otherwise, the case is also in excellent shape.
This banjo would be ideal for either a collector or a player. It plays like a dream and looks like the masterpiece that it is.
